From Dissident to President – The Life and Legacy of Václav Havel

The Vaclav Havel Center (VHC), in collaboration with the Czech Center New York, the Václav Havel Library in Prague, and The
Remembrance Society (TRS) in Washington DC warmly invites you to the opening of an inspiring exhibition. Exhibition
highlights include audiovisual footage, the bronze model of Olbram Zoubek’s Citizen/Disappearing Man sculpture, and a
seminar titled “Václav Havel’s Message to Young People,” led by Martin Palouš and Stéphanie Lehuger.

The opening will be followed by a wine reception.

Martin Palouš, President of Vaclav Havel Center in New York, is a former Czech dissident, later diplomat, and educator. In December 1976 he signed Charter 77 and in 1986 he was one of its three spokespersons. In November 1989 he belonged to the
founding members of the Civic Forum. After the Velvet Revolution he was a member of Parliament, and served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador to the United States, and Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations. He has also had a long teaching career at universities, both in the Czech Republic and in the United States, and published hundreds of articles and essays in the field of philosophy, social and political sciences, international law and international relations.

Stephanie Lehuger is an award-winning philosopher and artificial intelligence expert with the European Commission. She is the author of “A Philosopher President: Václav Havel – An Ethics Without Compromise” and hosts the podcast “The French Philosopher”. As a keynote speaker on tech ethics, Stephanie helps sharpen independent thinking and encourages critical engagement with the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence. She is currently working on her new book, which explores the value of nuance in overcoming binary perspectives.
